Health Care in Danger (HCID)

Healthcare in Danger is a joint project of APPNA Institute of Public Health, Jinnah Sindh Medical University and International Committee of Red Cross. The project aims to support health systems by preventing and controlling violence against health care by making workplaces safe and empowering the health care providers for managing violence. The objectives of the study are to identify different types of violence and assess the perception, tolerance threshold and impact of violence on all types of stakeholders, thus contributing to the identification of policies to better protect health care from violence and its consequences. Based on the results of the study on “Violence against Health Care” by APPNA Institute of Public Health, Jinnah Sindh Medical University, in collaboration with ICRC, certain recommendations were given after intense deliberations with the stakeholders.

Trainings on De-escalation of Violence

To prepare the healthcare staff to handle violent behavior in hospitals, trainings are being given on the process and method of de-escalation, practical steps to recognize impending violence, and improving communication skills particularly when giving bad news.

Interventions

One of the Strategic intervention by HCID Karachi project is, “Research on effects of low cost interventions on incidence of violence and assessing the psychological and financial impact of violent events by establishing a violence surveillance system in two public sector tertiary care hospitals of Karachi and Peshawar”. The main idea was to develop Hospital Security Policies to ensure the safety of Health Care Providers (HCPs) while delivering the duties at healthcare set ups.

Another initiative of HCID was raising awareness on Respect for Health Care Providers (HCPs) among the masses by involving communities through participation and engagement. For this purpose, an interventional study “Impact of Engaging Communities with their Support Mechanisms in Safeguarding Health Care” was initiated in May 2019.
