Message

Welcome to the Department of Biochemistry at the Sindh Medical College, JSMU. This is an exciting place to be and an incredibly exciting time in the field of Biochemistry.

Biochemistry is the journey of scientific discovery and new insights in the working of living organisms. Coupled with new technologies, it is leading to the development of molecular cures for human diseases. Our most important resources are the people in our department, including faculty, staff and students. We are fortunate to have dedicated and talented staff who keep the department running smoothly. We work in an intellectually vibrant and collegial environment characterized by extensive interactions within the department and with other basic science and clinical departments at SMC and JSMU. We are committed to excellence in the education of our medical and dental students.

We are a diverse group of faculty consisting of 2 Professors, 3 Assistant Professors and 6 Lecturers. Some of our faculty members, besides their teaching responsibilities are also engaged in further education i.e. Ph. D., M. Phil., FCPS etc. The students learn through interactive, multimedia presentations through Lectures, Small group discussion sessions of Case based Learning, hands on Laboratory practical skills and Self study in the Digital and Physical libraries. We follow a Spiral, vertically and horizontally integrated Modular system of teaching. Our Practical Laboratory is spread over 2500 square feet and equipped with the latest gadgets to cater to the needs of all the undergraduate MBBS and BDS students. Our laboratory Faculty and staff are well trained and experienced to help the students in acquiring the relevant skills to perform and interpret Biochemistry tests which will help them as clinicians and researchers.

Our Tutorial room is spread over nearly 1200 square feet and is equipped with multimedia to allow interactive and visual learning. A close student-faculty interaction has been a hallmark of our department. The College Library has the latest books and Journals of Biochemistry in the Physical and Digital Libraries for Faculty and students to create an intellectually stimulating learning environment. The Faculty works in close association with the Department of Medical Education through continuous workshops on updating Teaching and Evaluation strategies, e- learning etc.

We hope to provide our students a lifelong love of Biochemistry and the excitement of discovering the molecular working of the human body in health and disease because “Something, somewhere incredible is waiting to be known”.
